We're honoring Lifesaving Work

The Petco Foundation is teaming up with Victoria Stilwell to honor Unsung Heroes across the nation for their extraordinary lifesaving efforts on behalf of animals. Each year, one of these honorees is awarded the national Unsung Hero award at the Petco Foundation Lifesaving Awards.

Five individuals will be recognized and featured in the video series and their organizations will receive a $10,000 grant to continue their lifesaving work. One of the five will be recognized as the Petco Foundation’s national Unsung Hero Award recipient and their organization will receive a $25,000 grant.

The application is closed for 2018.

  • How to apply (click to expand)

To apply, you’ll need a brief description of the work the nominee does to contribute to your mission, why this person should be recognized nationally, photos of the nominated hero doing the work for which they are nominated, and a link to a 1-3 minute video of the nominated hero doing the work for which they are being nominated. If you are unable to provide video and still keep the nominee confidential, then submit a video stating why this nominee is extraordinary and stands out from others working hard to save lives. This does not need to be a professional video—it can be shot with your phone or camera.

  • Selection process (click to expand)

We’ll select 5 individuals to be recognized in our Love in Action video series and their organizations will receive a $10,000 grant to continue their lifesaving work. One of the five will be recognized as the Petco Foundation’s National Unsung Hero Award recipient and their organization will receive a $25,000 grant.

All Unsung Hero honorees and their organizations will need to be available between December-February to work with the Petco Foundation and Victoria Stilwell Enterprises (VSE) to create the Unsung Hero videos.

People’s choice voting will take place following the selection of the Unsung Heroes finalists.

  • Rules and other details (click to expand)

Because the video series produced and presented by Victoria Stilwell Enterprises (VSE), contains an element of surprise, we recommend that the names of individuals nominated at your organization are held confidential and that best efforts are used to complete the application fully without sharing the nomination with the nominated hero.

To qualify as an Unsung Hero, nominees must have served with your organization a minimum of two years and must contribute on average of at least 20 hours of service per week.
