Petco Foundation Invests more than $2.5 Million following Hurricane Harvey to help make Houston a Lifesaving Community

San Antonio, TX (October 26, 2017) – The Petco Foundation, a national non-profit, whose primary mission is to create a lifesaving nation, where no animal is unnecessarily euthanized, delivered more than $2.5 million to Houston area animal welfare organizations.

The Petco Foundation believes in supporting and empowering communities and their animal welfare organizations that wholeheartedly commit to saving lives. “Hurricane Harvey rescue efforts illustrated one thing loud and clear, Houstonians deeply care about their animals,” said Petco Foundation executive director, Susanne Kogut. “Witnessing countless people walking through waist-high waters carrying animals above their shoulders spoke volumes. Coupled with Judge Emmett and Mayor Sylvester Turner’s announcement that all evacuation shelters needed to accept pets, we saw first-hand just how much love Houstonians have for their pets. At Petco and the Petco Foundation, we share that love of pets.”

The Petco Foundation believes it is time to put that love into action every single day, to help Houston create a lifesaving community. Both Austin and San Antonio have achieved community-wide save rates for animals in shelters that exceed 90%, the benchmark for a lifesaving community. And we firmly believe that the same can now be done in Houston.

Many organizations, like the City of Houston – BARC Animal Shelter and Adoptions, are working hard to save lives. Organizations like Rescued Pets Movement, Houston PetSet and animal shelters in surrounding communities share the common goal of ending unnecessary euthanasia. But creating a lifesaving community requires the community as a whole to be involved, not just the animal shelters. “If just 1% more of Houstonians adopted or fostered a shelter pet each year, Houston could reach the lifesaving benchmark,” said Kogut. “All of us in the Petco family encourage Houston’s animal-loving community to join us to make the vision of Houston becoming a lifesaving city a reality.”

“We are honored to be a recipient of the Petco Foundation’s generous donation and we look forward to partnering with the Petco leadership team on projects at BARC,” said Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner. “We are grateful for the overwhelming support we have received for the care of dogs and cats during hurricane recovery efforts and hope that the momentum in animal welfare continues. I challenge every Houstonian to give shelter pets a second chance at the life they deserve. Volunteer, foster, adopt and donate. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of shelter pets across our community.”

For years, Petco’s 42 Houston area stores have partnered with local animal welfare organizations to help adopt animals into new loving homes and provide product and service discounts to new adopters. On Thursday October 26th, Petco’s senior leadership team, including, CEO Brad Weston, will be touring the City of Houston’s BARC facility to learn more about their challenges and lend a hand to help revitalize BARC’s dog enrichment play yards.

In addition, the Petco Foundation will be presenting a check for $125,000 to the Houston BARC Foundation to support BARC’s lifesaving work. With this check and others listed below, the Petco Foundation will be fulfilling promises made following Hurricane Harvey to help Houston area organizations rebuild by investing more than $2.5 million in the lifesaving work of the following organizations:

“Petco Foundation’s investments have enabled many organizations to substantially increase the number of lives saved in their communities as we direct significant grants to organizations that are considerably under resourced,” said Charlie Piscitello Board Chairman of the Petco Foundation. “We want to partner with Houston in their lifesaving work and hope our investment will inspire others to join with us in this important cause. “

Additional organizations received smaller investments and product and supplies directly for Harvey relief.
