A Dream Come True

For two years, I have had a dream of getting a dog. My parents were not excited about the idea. They said I was not responsible enough for a dog. They said I did not keep my room clean or put away my things. They talked to me about being responsible and how that was important if we were to get a dog. So I worked to show them that I was responsible.

"I learned that my dream of getting a dog can come true by me showing responsibility and staying on task. "

I kept my room clean and I starting putting away my clean clothes. I did my homework and made my school lunches. I kept hoping I would get a dog. I kept asking my Mom and Dad about getting a dog. I did my best to focus on my responsibilities. I did not complain about helping around the house. I learned that if I wanted something really bad that I needed to prove that I could do my responsibilities.

Over Labor Day weekend, my mom showed my dad a picture of a puppy. The puppy was from Angels Among Us Rescue. His mom was a rat terrier and they don’t know what kind of dog his dad was. We were able to go visit the foster family that had the puppy. I fell in love with “Snook” and wanted to adopt him. The foster mom said we needed to think about it a lot because it was a big responsibility, especially because it was a puppy.

We went home and had a long family discussion about the responsibility of getting a puppy and decided we could do it. My mom emailed the foster mom that we wanted to adopt Snook. We had to have a home visit to make sure our house was good for a puppy. The lady that came to visit our house was very nice and said she would let the foster mom know that our house was fine to adopt the puppy.

My dream came true, which is very surprising to me. On September 9, we adopted Snook! I could not have been happier! I learned that my dream of getting a dog can come true by me showing responsibility and staying on task.

Snook is now named Summit. And now I have more responsibility because I get up early in the morning to take him out. I clean up after him. Then I feed him and take him out again before I go to school. I can’t wait to get home from school so that I can play with Summit. He loves to lay by me while I do my homework. He is a huge napper. He is doing great with his potty training. I love to take him for walks. He is the best puppy ever!

Each year, the Petco Foundation invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign, giving the organization that they adopted from a chance to receive a grant award. This story by Aimee Moynihan won Angels Among Us Pet Rescue, Inc. in Georgia a 2017 Holiday Wishes award.
