Adopted German Shepherd Leads the Way to Health and Happiness
130 Pounds Lost, Joy and Happiness Gained
Ginamarie + Lucky
Adopting Lucky helped Ginamarie’s luck change for the better: he helped her adopt a healthier lifestyle and lose 130 lbs. along the way!
"Lucky became my trainer, and it was a joy to see how happy he was when we were walking together."
My name is Ginamarie, and Lucky is the dog who gave me life-changing love.
After the death of my previous dog, I wanted to adopt a younger pup. The adoption counselor wanted me to meet a 5-and-a-half-year-old dog named Lucky, but I was hesitant because I didn’t want to have another loss in a few years. After I met the younger dogs, I did not feel that they were right for me. I asked to see Lucky again. He leaned on me, looked at me with his big brown eyes, and I just knew he was meant to be mine.
Lucky was amazing! He was big and he loved to walk. I had gone through two years of recovery from an injury and it was difficult for me to walk. I was overweight, I could only walk Lucky a block. He didn’t care how slow I went or how far we walked, he was just happy to go walking with me. After we started walking I decided I wanted to get healthier. Lucky became my trainer, and it was a joy to see how happy he was when we were walking together. Because of him, we now know all of the people in our neighborhood. Many of them are older and he is always very excited to see them. We always stop so they can pet him and share their stories with us.
Lucky has changed my life in many ways. We now walk at least three miles a day. It was hard at first but I never gave up because I wanted Lucky to be happy. During the first year I had Lucky, I lost 130 pounds and continue to lose more. I tried to lose weight previously but with Lucky, I made a lifestyle change that worked. Lucky also helped me have a better outlook on life because he brings me so much joy and happiness.
My health improved tremendously. My foot injury healed, my blood pressure went from 160/100 to 117/70, my blood work is normal, and I am now a very healthy 60-year-old. Lucky fills my heart with joy and is so silly that he makes me laugh all the time. I have more confidence, strength, friends and I have good health because of Lucky’s life-changing love.
Lucky and I have now made it our mission to share our adoption story. Lucky has an Instagram page (silly_lucky_dog), and we hope that by sharing his life and how much he is loved people will see how wonderful it can be to love and rescue an older dog. There will never be enough words to express my gratitude to Coastal German Shepherd Rescue for saving Lucky and encouraging me to adopt an older dog. It has been a life-changing experience for both of us.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story and for your consideration to give a grant to Coastal German Shepherd Rescue to help them continue their amazing work.
Each year, the Petco Foundation invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign, giving the organization that they adopted from a chance to receive a grant award. This story by Ginamarie won Coastal German Shepherd Rescue of Southern California in Irvine, California a 2019 Holiday Wishes award.
