Meet Miss Molly! Her residence is classroom #606 at Liberty High School in Liberty, Missouri. My name is Crystal Bosch, and I teach Special Education. A majority of the students on my caseload have Autism Spectrum Disorders. As a form of therapy, we’ve had Friday visits from our dear friends, Doug and his therapy dogs, for several years. As a class, we decided that pet therapy on Friday only simply wasn’t enough. We decided to adopt a bun-bun in November 2017.

Molly is our therapy bunny. She roams freely around our classroom and is calming in some of the most overwhelming moments. High school is stressful, and Molly helps us survive! When we first adopted Molly, she was very timid and somewhat anti-social. Molly has been a member of our classroom for nearly 10 months now, and she has really come out of her shell. Molly loves to sit in her special spot and watch the kids go through their daily routines. She eagerly awaits moments when someone slips her a carrot or an apple. Molly has gone from being on edge when someone approaches her to full blown lounge mode when she’s pet. She adores all of the attention!

As a class, we have become more receptive to responsibilities because Molly has shown us the importance of classroom jobs/duties. In addition, sometimes the outdoors can be unpredictable and uncomfortable, but Molly encourages us to go on walks and explore new spaces that we may have otherwise avoided. Molly has been an incredible addition to our classroom. To say my kiddos adore her would simply be an understatement! Room #606 at Liberty High School is known as a safe haven for many at-risk students. Molly’s presence has made our classroom more inviting and more loving for all students, regardless of their special needs or circumstances.

Each year, the Petco Foundation invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign, giving the organization that they adopted from a chance to receive a grant award. This story by Crystal won KC Pet Project in Missouri a 2018 Holiday Wishes award.
