Rescue Cats Bring Joy to Man's Life
Bob + Frankie
There isn’t much of a reason to smile in our house. My husband, Bob, has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s dementia and independence is now a distant memory. No driving, no walking alone, no enjoyment, and help needed with everything. When asked if he would like to get a cat the response was “I don’t much like cats.”
A ride to a local store where adoptions were taking place wasn’t met with much enthusiasm, but we didn’t see much of that on any day. Last Chance Animal Sanctuary, Inc. had many cats present for adoption and several very excited volunteers who shared with us they were actual foster families. They knew all of the details about every one of these kittens from their personalities, favorite toys, ability to get along with other animals and, best of all, which one would be perfect for someone with Bob’s problems.
"Frankie purred so loudly I began to see a small smile on Bob’s face."
A Turkish Van mixed breed with an orange saddle back, white tummy and HUGE paws for such a little thing was unceremoniously plopped into Bob’s arms. The lovely young foster lady told us Frankie loved to sleep wrapped around the back of your neck and purred all the time. Indeed Frankie purred so loudly I began to see a small smile on Bob’s face.
Frankie came home with us. That afternoon Frankie immediately bonded with Bobby – go figure – sleeping around his neck. The smile on Bob’s face and loving look was heartwarming. In fact, Bob didn’t want to move so a picture was taken of BOTH sleeping. So many smiles happened that week that we returned the very next week to adopt another kitten from the same agency!
The man who has Alzheimer’s can’t remember the cats’ names and sometimes calls them “pooch,” but they sure give him endless smiles and loud laughs! God bless Last Chance Animal Sanctuary and their awesome foster families for bringing these last chance animals to the world.
Each year, the Petco Foundation invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign, giving the organization that they adopted from a chance to receive a grant award. This story by Jane Smith won Last Chance Animal Sanctuary in Sarasota, Florida a 2015 Holiday Wishes award.
