Tim/Kelly + Kiwi
Kiwi’s pet parents, Tim and Kelly, knew Kiwi went through a lot before they adopted her, and they are thankful she had lots of love and support.
Kiwi was five years old when she was brought into Rancho Coastal Humane Society in San Diego, California. The 36-pound, golden-haired pup was shy but warmed up to shelter staff with a little love. During her stay, staff noticed that Kiwi was not feeling well. After exams and tests, medical staff discovered that Kiwi had a large tumor.
"Having the Petco Foundation support us as we treated Kiwi for cancer was so important. Now she’s in a happy, forever home, and that’s exactly what we want to see."
That is when the Rancho Coastal Humane Society turned to the Petco Foundation for help. Through the Shelter Pet Cancer Treatment Fund – a grant opportunity made possible in partnership with Blue Buffalo that helps Petco Foundation partner organizations with the cost of pet cancer treatment for animals currently in their care or recently adopted – Kiwi was able to receive the medical care she needed before finding a loving home. Pet cancer is the #1 disease-related killer of cats and dogs and can often be cost prohibitive for sheltering organizations to treat. The Petco Foundation and Blue Buffalo together have invested more than $16 million to help fight pet cancer and this fund which launched in 2019 aims to help provide lifesaving cancer for shelter pets in need.
“We believe that it is truly together that we save lives,” said Nina Jimenez Taylor, Rancho Coastal Humane Society development & communications director. “We always want to treat an animal when we can, so this was absolutely so helpful in making sure that Kiwi had a great recovery.”
Over the course of a few months, Kiwi received weekly chemotherapy injections. She responded positively to treatment and remained calm while being gently cared for by Rancho Coastal Humane Society staff. She continued to eat well and had no ill side effects. After a successful recovery, she was then cleared by medical staff for adoption.
Tim and Kelly had lost their dog previously that same year and felt it was time to move on and fill the hole they felt in their lives. They met sweet Kiwi and knew she was meant to be part of their family. “When we met her at the shelter, she was the one that kind of spoke to us the most,” said Tim. “She was very shy and nervous, and I kind of latch on to those kind of dogs.” Now the three of them enjoy spending time together and going to the park. “We’re so thrilled that she’s cured and that she’s ours now,” said Kelly.
“These kinds of funds are what help us give animals a second chance,” said Nina. “Having the Petco Foundation’s support as we treated Kiwi for cancer was so important. Now she’s in a happy, forever home, and that’s exactly what we want to see.”
