From Adoptable Puppy to Travel Buddy, Eugie Makes Life Brighter
When Rebecca met Eugie, she met her puppy soulmate.
Rebecca + Eugie
Rebecca and Eugie were soulmates form the moment they met. Their adventures together have only strengthened their status as besties!
"Eugie quickly became my bestie, my ride or die, my little scruffball of joy."
This isn’t a story about the most beautiful dog in the world. It doesn’t have a defining moment where someone was saved in their darkest hour. This isn’t a story about miracles. It’s Eugie’s story, and Eugie is just a dog—a dog who loves a human who loves her more than anything else in the world.
About five years ago, I was playing roller derby, and the local dog shelter (ARNO) was the charity at an event. They brought some dogs up for adoption, and I had to pet them all. Within seconds of seeing this tiny, helpless, shivering black pup, I looked at my friend and said, “This is my dog isn’t it?”
Eugie quickly became my bestie, my ride or die, my little scruffball of joy. Short of her propensity to eat things she shouldn’t, she is the ideal pet. Every day when I leave for work she stands on her hind legs, peering out the window with her sad eyes, breaking my heart. When I return, it’s like I’ve been gone for years, as she leaps in joy and spins circles. She loves our daily walks and sitting on the couch with me. She rarely leaves my side, unless someone else has a treat to tantalize her. She cuddles at night until I’m just about asleep, then settles at the bottom of the bed. The world can be full of commotion and uncertainty, but Eugie, she’s always there.
In return for her undying devotion, I’ve tried to fill her life with an equal amount of wonder. Sometimes a new chew toy is enough to do the trick; other times it’s a trip to a mud puddle-ridden dog park. She’s well-traveled and is the world’s best hiking buddy, accompanying me to eight states thus far. She has hiked in Florida and Arkansas, and wanted to chase a squirrel in the Grand Canyon until she realized she was on the edge of… well, a Grand Canyon. For a little mutt from a small shelter in south Louisiana, she sure has seen a lot of the world.
Eugie is my comfort when I’ve had a rough day, my encouragement to get outside and enjoy nature, my unconditional supporter. I can’t imagine what my life would be like if the shelter hadn’t rescued her, or taken the time to participate in events where people like me can find their pet partners. My life is forever changed for the better because every day, in the littlest of ways, Eugie makes it wonderful.
Each year, the Petco Foundation invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign, giving the organization that they adopted from a chance to receive a grant award. This story by Rebecca won Animal Rescue New Orleans in Louisiana a 2018 Holiday Wishes award.
