Foster Kittens Cruise into Writer’s Happily Ever After
For Kendra, Sherbert and Sundae are the perfect furry travel buddies.
Kendra + Sundae and Sherbert
After COVID-19, foster kittens Sherbert and Sundae brought Kendra joy and companionship — joining her on travels in their customized cat-friendly RV, and adding positivity to help her overcome writer’s block.
"I built these special kittens into my travel plans. I crafted a play area for the cats in the overcab, added tunnels for them throughout the RV, and included a cat tree and cat toys into the design, creating a place for them to call home."
COVID-19 drastically changed my 2020 plans. With my in-person job switching to remote, I felt isolated and alone. Instead of dwelling on my sadness, I decided to focus my time and energy on doing something good — so I started fostering kittens for San Antonio Pets Alive! From March to June, I took in 20-plus foster kittens, nursing them back to health and finding them homes. Sherbert and Sundae, however, were destined for greater things: a life of adventure with me.
When my summer travel plans were officially canceled due to COVID-19, I decided that it was time to pull the trigger and bought a 1995 RV, naming it Janeway after the leading lady Star Trek captain. For three weeks, I spent eight- to twelve-hour days in the Texas heat renovating the RV, and San Antonio Pets Alive! kittens, Sherbert and Sundae, would sit in the window, watching me walk back and forth from the house to the RV as I worked.
I built these special kittens into my travel plans. I crafted a play area for the cats in the overcab, added tunnels for them throughout the RV, and included a cat tree and cat toys into the design, creating a place for them to call home. With the RV ready to set sail, I began to focus on my writing again. As a disciplined writer and playwright, I usually write every day to meet my word count and hit publication deadlines. With COVID-19, I felt completely shut down and couldn’t write because all of my energy was spent just trying to stay positive. But when I adopted Sherbert and Sundae, I didn’t have to work to find joy. It was just there. Suddenly, I was writing again!
With Sherbert and Sundae giving me much-needed positivity and life, I’ve submitted two plays, one of which has been accepted for publication. Sherbert and Sundae give me a reason to get up in the morning, something wonderful to focus on, and someone to go on adventures with. With Sherbert and Sundae, I’m not alone, and they make my life, outlook, and adventures far sweeter than I ever imagined.
Each year, the Petco Foundation Holiday Wishes campaign invites adopters to share stories of how their pets have changed their lives to give the organizations that they’ve adopted from the chance to receive grant awards.
