Adopter Can't Imagine Life Without his Troublemaker
David + Bonnie
I was truly lost when I first met Bonnie in Kennel C-45. I was unhappy with my life, had a recent arrest and hated my job. I was doing court-ordered hours and everything was going wrong until I met that slender, skittish hound.
"She gave my life direction – a direction that will help thousands of animals in need and truly saved me from my downward spiral."
For whatever reason, it’s almost like she knew she needed me, and I needed her. I always spent time with her when I volunteered. One day, the shelter took her to an adoption event. I adopted her on the spot. The thought of not having her in my life made me sick.
Bonnie’s been a part of my family for three years now. I eventually got a job with the Humane Society of St. Lucie County and decided to dedicate my life to animals in need. I saw what love can do for one pet and what that pet can do for one person. She gave my life direction – a direction that will help thousands of animals in need and truly saved me from my downward spiral.
I know it sounds cliché, but she saved me. She came into my life at just the right time. Who knew an 11-month-old hound, who was returned three times and was a little troublemaker, could make such an impact on my life.
I never believed in love at first sight, but I know I loved her and needed her ever since I comforted her in her time of need. Adopting saves more than the life of the pet you bring home.
Each year, the Petco Foundation invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign, giving the organization that they adopted from a chance to receive a grant award. This story by David Lynch won Humane Society of St. Lucie County in Fort Pierce, Florida a 2016 Holiday Wishes award.
