Kevin + Molly
“Miracle Molly” McMullen came into our lives unexpectedly, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Molly had been hit by a train and found on the train tracks by Officer Kevin McMullen (my boyfriend). She survived her injuries, thanks to the love and compassion of the staff at Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS), who treated her and recognized this mini pittie’s strength and will to live.
"A white, wiggly, freckly-faced mini pittie, she lost a hind leg and part of her tail in the accident."
BARCS let Kevin visit Molly while she was recovering. After one of his visits, I asked how she was doing. As he spoke, his eyes filled with tears, which is something I had never seen him do in our six years of dating. In just a week, Molly helped Kevin open up emotionally, which was something I had been trying to do for some time.
I knew from that moment on we had to adopt Molly. If she could have that kind of impact on one human being, who knows what else she could do.
Despite the unknowns of her first couple years of life or even how she ended up on the train tracks, we adopted her into our furry family, which includes three dogs and one cat. The emotional connection between Molly and Kevin continues to grow and actually helped Kevin and I achieve a stronger relationship – an unexpected gift.
Molly defies the odds as a tri-paw and is a breed that many fear. Her love and personality, however, draw people in. We have already had encounters with people who admit to being fearful of pit bulls and dogs, in general, but at the end of their petting and kisses with her, they thank us for proving them wrong.
Molly visits schools to teach children how to approach, handle and respect dogs. These interactions show children how to be considerate of dogs and help others see the abundance of love she has to offer. Every day, she proves people wrong about her breed.
Each year, the Petco Foundation invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign, giving the organization that they adopted from a chance to receive a grant award. This story by Claire Giambi won Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter in Baltimore, Maryland a 2016 Holiday Wishes award.
