Bottle baby kitten becomes the best friend Corissa needed, and helps her cope with anxiety and depression through snuggles, purrs, and companionship.
"I never would have imagined a tiny bottle baby would end up saving me, but here we are two years and a million photos later."
Let me first state that I love bottle babies. If an orphaned infant came into the shelter, I was the one to take them home until they were weaned off the bottle. Which is how I ended up with Frappe. He was born a tad early, via C-section, and needed someone to raise him. I had just come back from work after the death of my grandma, I needed a reason to make it to work every day, and then this kitten came along. I jumped at the opportunity to raise him!
Bringing the kitten home required me to get up every one and a half to two hours for feedings, make sure he was bathed and learning how to be a cat. I was at an all-time low when Frappe was born, and I had hit a point where I had horrible anxiety and I was depressed. I truly believe that this kitten kept me alive—that he ended up saving me, when I thought I was saving him. As he grew, we learned how to live together. Frappe learned how to help me cope with anxiety and depression, and I learned that everything was going to be okay.
I now know I will never be alone, or feel alone when he is around. Frappe helped me gain confidence in myself, and helps ease my anxiety when it is high. Through the last two years we have traveled to five states, gone on numerous adventures, and worked through the rough days. I never would have imagined a tiny bottle baby would end up saving me, but here we are two years and a million photos later. I am still here, and that’s because of Frappe. He is curious, loving, playful, helpful, adventurous, and kind while I am shy, quiet, nervous and anxious. We are complete opposites, yet somehow we are best of friends.
Each year, the Petco Foundation invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign, giving the organization that they adopted from a chance to receive a grant award. This story by Corissa won Jasper County Animal Rescue League and Humane Society in Iowa a 2018 Holiday Wishes award.
