Ashley + Felix
Felix the kitten knew one thing for certain: he was going home.
"I lay across her arms purring as hard as I could. My purrs lulled me to sleep and my mom began cooing at me. ‘Ok fine, let’s go home,’ she said as she took me to the office to get the adoption paperwork. Hook, line and sinker, folks!"
Welcome, all you aspiring house cats, to my lecture on how to win the hearts of those who come to visit. I guarantee that after this class, you will be able to get any person to adopt you – and that is where the real fun begins.
You see, I was a black and white kitten, and for some reason we are always the last ones to get picked. Per usual, I was the last available kitten on the adoption floor when my unsuspecting human came in “just to visit.” As she walked by the kennel, I reached my arm out as far as I could, but she kept on walking. My brother, who was on hold at the time, laughed and said “She’ll never pick you, are you kidding?”
She was looking at the adult cats when I mustered up the loudest scream I could! She whipped around saying “Alright, we can cuddle for a minute.” I lay across her arms purring as hard as I could. My purrs lulled me to sleep and my mom began cooing at me. “Ok fine, let’s go home,” she said as she took me to the office to get the adoption paperwork. Hook, line and sinker, folks, I had caught a big one. Like a tuna, oh man, I love tuna…
I mean, uh, right, the story…
I slept in her arms through the whole process. As they finished up, the adoption counselor asked, “Who’s ready to go home?” They all giggled and just like that, my parents were wrapped around my little paw. Going to the shelter and adopting me completely changed my mom’s life! They say I fill their hearts with joy and make their house a home.
My mom has always loved animals, but she didn’t think she would ever work in a career with them. She began volunteering, and a year ago, she was hired as a staff member at the shelter I was adopted from! Within a few short months, she became the director and has now devoted her life to rescuing animals all because of me. Before me, mom had no idea what she was going to do with her life. Rescuing me and my fur-siblings gave her a purpose.
Now, you may not find a mom who is as crazy of a cat lady as mine, but I promise all you critters who are sitting in shelters right now, your time is coming! Your person is out there. As their companion, your job is to show them that you will always be there for them. They may have adopted you, but I promise, you will be the one to rescue them.
I want you all to practice your best kitten screams, tail wags and puppy-dog eyes. Your happy ending is coming, just you wait, and if you’re lucky, you might end up in my mom’s shelter where she’ll shower you with kisses while you wait for your furever home.
Each year, the Petco Foundation invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign, giving the organization that they adopted from a chance to receive a grant award. This story by Ashley won Whitman County Humane Society in Pullman, Washington a 2019 Holiday Wishes award.
