Adopted “Dog Sister” is Showered With Love Via Song
Lydia always wanted to adopt a dog--and now she tells Venus daily how much she loves her!
"My daughter runs into the house after school because she can’t wait to spend time with her new sister. Venus sleeps on Lydia’s bed, curled up next to her—two kindred spirits."
When my husband asked me what gift I wanted for our 10th wedding anniversary, I didn’t hesitate. “I want to rescue a dog,” I declared emphatically. My 6-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Lydia, was totally on board. She longed to have a “sister” that she helped choose, who would be her best friend. More than that, Lydia is adopted and she wanted to adopt a dog so that they could share a very special common bond.
When we saw Venus on the Posh Pets Rescue website, we fell in love. Her soulful eyes called out to us even through a photograph. We were in a room with several other dogs to consider when we met Venus at the shelter. Venus was shy and tentative, but she eventually came over to us and lovingly put her paws on my knee… then my daughter’s… then my husband’s. She looked up at us as if to say, “Choose me. Take me home.” It was then that we realized that Venus was meant to be for us.
Venus is a survivor. She was malnourished and had only four teeth left when she arrived at Posh Pets. When we got her home, she was confused, nervous, withdrawn, awkward, and had strange habits. But she seemed to appreciate the love and care we were giving her.
After only a short time, she gained weight, began to trust us, and blended perfectly with our family. My daughter runs into the house after school because she can’t wait to spend time with her new sister. Venus sleeps on Lydia’s bed, curled up next to her—two kindred spirits. She loves to sit with Venus, pet her, and sing songs to her that she makes up. She sings, “Venus, you are my heart. Venus, you put my heart back together when it is broken. You are so beautiful. I love you. I will never leave you.”
Every day Venus brightens our lives with her charming personality. She makes us laugh with her antics. But that’s not all. She has taught us to be more patient, more understanding, and more joyful, and to remember that every day is a blessing—and to count those blessings every day. We consider her to be a precious angel sent from heaven and the greatest anniversary gift. Most importantly, we consider her an even better gift for my daughter to help her understand what we have been telling her all along: that an adopted family member is no different than a biological family member, you love them just the same.
Each year, the Petco Foundation invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign, giving the organization that they adopted from a chance to receive a grant award. This story by Sondra won Posh Pets Rescue in New York a 2018 Holiday Wishes award.
