Adopted Dog Gets the Royal Treatment
He went from rags to riches, but his most valuable asset is his family’s love.
Jennifer + Royal
On March 6, 2017, we had to say goodbye to our beloved Pasco, who was 13 years old, because of terminal illness. I didn’t want to rush into getting another pet right away. With a new baby, I had my hands full. But when I saw the story of Diamond, I couldn’t resist.
"My son and daughter will have a friend to grow up with, a buddy to love on every day when they come home."
Diamond and her 10 puppies were in 110-degree California heat with no shelter, food, or water. Diamond weighed only 25 pounds and was sacrificing herself to take care of her babies, but sadly, some of the pups died. Diamond and the five surviving puppies were saved and eventually made their way to Lucky Paws Rescue in Springfield, Oregon, where their lives were about to change dramatically.
Upon hearing their story, I immediately put in an application to rescue one of the adorable little pit bull puppies. And on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, I drove almost three hours to bring Topaz back to our home. We gave him a new name: Royal, because from then on he would live like a king!
Since the moment he entered our lives, it has been apparent how resilient and sweet pit bulls are. Royal holds no resentment for the way he was treated early on in life. His magnanimous character just wants to love and please everyone with whom he comes into contact. His silly personality shows through every day, and the gentle way he interacts with his one-year-old brother is such a sweet thing to watch. He even has a viral video sweeping the Internet where he is learning how to crawl after his baby human!
Royal is lucky enough to be able to come to work with me every day, where I am a nurse. My patients, staff, and family members look forward to greeting and visiting with him. This is all made possible because of the generous efforts of the people and agencies responsible for saving animals like Royal. Without them, so many would still be in awful situations.
Adopting a puppy in need has changed our lives in so many ways. My son and daughter will have a friend to grow up with, a buddy to love on every day when they come home, and they will learn the value of unselfish love. I also get a faithful companion—one who will never again know suffering and pain, because he has a home full of warm hearts to love him!
Adopting a pet is so wonderful, because while you may not be able to help them all, you can certainly change the life of one.
Each year, the Petco Foundation invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign, giving the organization that they adopted from a chance to receive a grant award. This story by Jennifer Gage won Lucky Paws Rescue in Oregon a 2017 Holiday Wishes award.
