Adopter and Senior Cat Enjoy Growing Older Together
Now Mildred and Lena are enjoying their golden years side by side.
Mildred + Lena
At 85 years young, Mildred hoped to find the companionship of a feline friend. A beautiful adoptable cat fast became her perfect match.
"The simple truth is that Lena and I absolutely adore each other and she brightens my life every day! She is so sweet and purrs loudly when I brush or hold her, agreeing that we’re a wonderful team."
My story of two ladies growing older together shows how loving a pet can truly change a senior’s life for the better.
In 2014, I was still active at age 85 but feeling lonely after my husband of 57 years passed away. I decided the companionship of a pet would enrich my life, and thought a cat would be the best fit. But since I’d never had a kitty, I enlisted the help of my daughter who volunteers with Second Chance Pets rescue in Houston.
One day she sent me a photo of a 9-year-old Russian Blue who had a sweet face but a sad story. Lena had been adopted as a kitten but when her elderly owner’s health deteriorated, the family returned Lena to SCP. Poor Lena was depressed and confused being back in foster care and her photo touched my heart, so I flew to Texas hoping we’d be a match. Happily, it was love at first sight and we quickly developed a strong bond — Lena needed a new mama to love, and I loved her immediately so I adopted her!
Lena flew with me back to Las Vegas, an interesting first-time adventure for both of us — she was good as gold on the flight and thankfully came out of her depression and adjusted very quickly to her forever home. The simple truth is that Lena and I absolutely adore each other and she brightens my life every day! She is so sweet and purrs loudly when I brush or hold her, agreeing that we’re a wonderful team.
As our fifth “adoptoversary” approaches, Lena and I are gracefully growing older together (I just turned 90 and she is now 14), and she is still the light of my life. We recently embarked on a new adventure by moving to Houston to live closer to my daughter. Lena and I love our new apartment in a friendly senior community and enjoy greeting neighbors when I take her for walks in her pet stroller. Our daily routine revolves around me spoiling her and her rewarding me with loud purrs that make me so happy. Every morning she licks my face till I wake up, then puts her face on mine and purrs so I don’t fall back asleep. In the evenings she watches TV snuggled on my lap, and each night she sleeps up against me, both of us happy to be there for each other.
Lena is my beloved furry companion and she has made a BIG difference in my life — I’m so grateful to Second Chance Pets for saving my sweet girl as we truly are the purrfect match!
Each year, the Petco Foundation invites adopters to share the story of how their adopted pet changed their lives during the annual Holiday Wishes campaign, giving the organization that they adopted from a chance to receive a grant award. This story by Mildred won Second Chance Pets in League City, Texas a 2019 Holiday Wishes award.
